“I want to be known 10,000 years from now as part of a generation that left something positive behind. I’m going to add something to the earth in artifacts that represents us.”
This personal philosophy guides jeweler-turned-artist John Winston in the creation of his sculptures, whether they are his belt buckles to be collected and worn or three-dimensional sculptures for exhibit. Modeling an array of materials, such as silver and gold, turquoise and 250-million-year-old fossils, Winston only has to look at the stones to know what they’ll become.
Drawing inspiration from the works of Erte, Harry Winston, Georgia O’Keefe and his surroundings, Winston’s one-of-a-kind, hand-carved pieces are captivating, particularly his True American Forefathers. “One day, I looked at this three-foot-tall Kingman Arizona Turquoise, and I envisioned the eagle. Within its face, I saw Crazy Horse. It was then that I realized what the stone was meant to become,” adds Mr. Winston, “over the course of six-and-a-half years, seven other famous Native American faces appeared.” Enhanced by the life-like bronze claws and tail feathers of Carrara marble, this sculpture is one of Winston’s finest.
